Spanish-Language Telehealth Patient Education for Diabetes Now Available
dMeetings releases Spanish-Language version of their successful Diabetes Online Patient Education Series
[Jacksonville, FL, June 2, 2020] – dMeetings, a leading provider of telehealth patient education for people living with chronic diseases, has just released a Spanish-language version of their online diabetes patient education classes.
dMeetings has offered their diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) online curriculum in English since 2014. According to Brad Bellingrath, Executive Producer of the series and dMeetings CEO, not only were the company’s clients requesting a Spanish-language version of the program, but “there is a pressing need for diabetes education for the Spanish-speaking population. Sadly, Latin American populations are more susceptible to diabetes and thus there is a tremendous need for patient education in this area.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that of the estimated 34.2 million people in the United States living with diabetes, approximately 4.2 million are Hispanic. Despite the position of the American Diabetes Association “that all individuals with diabetes receive DSME/S at diagnosis and as needed thereafter,” fewer than 5% of Medicare beneficiaries with diagnosed diabetes and 6.8% of privately insured individuals with diagnosed diabetes have participated in any DSMES program. Participation in this critical education is even lower among Latino populations.
The dMeetings platform provides the patient education via an online learning management system (LMS). This LMS can be accessed from anywhere from anywhere on the web at the convenience of the learner. The LMS allows health coaches, administrators and patients the ability to track progress and measure comprehension throughout the series. The education series itself consists of ten 30-minute sessions, with content that is derived from the seven core behaviors of managing diabetes outlined by the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists (ADCES). Each session is delivered by a Certified Diabetes Care and education specialist (CDCES) and is accompanied by a quiz and self-study resources.
